About Us
Plus Center utilizes Conductive Education which helps people to see the world not as a series of obstacles but as a place of opportunities.
Program Description
What is Conductive Education?
CE approaches motor disabilities from an educational perspective, rather than a medical perspective, which enables a person with motor challenges to adapt into their environment. The essence of CE is to focus on the total development of a person, particularly the integration of motor, intellectual, social, and academic skills.
Plus Center practices this philosophy throughout the program. Our clients are encouraged to use their abilities. In our environment it is easier and more natural for clients to be challenged by each other and to use their best abilities and improve on them. Clients complete exercise programs and stations in a group setting and are encouraged to learn and motive themselves from each other.
At our center, we emphasize having our clients out of their wheelchairs and engaging in a social, group environment. We find that by working together in daily schedules, our clients help encourage one another to meet their individual goals. Each client at Plus Center builds on developmental goals based on their specific motor, self-care, communication, and social abilities.
Components of the program may include:
Group Range of Motion
Clients are guided through a comprehensive, body stretching routine to prepare their muscles and joints for active participation and increase range of motion. Each person is supported by a staff member.
Individual Stations
Exercise, social, or academic-based activities designed specifically for a client’s goals. Clients may work on stations by themselves or one-on-one with a well-trained staff member.
Group Programs
Our programs incorporate various exercises that focus on fundamental movements and positions to improve their coordination, balance, and strengthen physical levels of functioning.
Walking Program
Depending on ability, one of our main goals for a client is typically to practice walking to improve overall coordination. Clients may use walking devices, staff support, or a treadmill.
Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)
Throughout the day at Plus Center, clients have numerous opportunities with staff assistance to practice ADLs that may relate to self-care, such as toileting, hand washing, teeth brushing, dressing, and undressing and instrumental activities of daily living including money management and communication.
Arts & Crafts, Games and Learning Activities are part of the daily routine to further improve social and motor skills.
